Both returned the "Cable Unplugged" status in the Network Pref Pane.Īs I stated before, this is on a work laptop, so I don't have the Admin credentials to really do anything, including changing any settings on preference panes.īUT, the IT guy at my work got the Thunderbolt Ethernet working again. My Thunderbolt Ethernet connection stopped working, and then subsequently the USB to Ethernet connection stopped as well.
Re-imaging isn't an option because at some point a restart will be inevitable. printers and servers are accessible only on a local wired network.
#THUNDERBOLT DONGLE DRIVERS#
That worked flawlessly (no drivers needed) until I restarted, and now the USB/Ethernet connection status remains permanently at Cable Unplugged as well.Īny ideas as to why ethernet would work the first time a cable is plugged in and then never again? I can't roll back to 10.10.4 because of IT policy, and I can't be restricted to wi-fi because my dept. When I plugged it in, the system immediately recognized the new connection and after prompting for Admin credentials, added a USB to Ethernet connection to Network Settings. Now with Thunderbolt Ethernet not working, I tried using a Belkin USB 2.0 to Ethernet adapter. The Thunderbolt ports work with an external monitor, so bad logic board seems unlikely. The IT guys tried to troubleshoot the issue by removing and adding locations, but had no success. After a shutdown/restart, the MBP no longer recognized a connection (Cable Unplugged Status). The Apple Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter worked the first time it was plugged in. It was recently re-imaged with a fresh 10.10.5 system. Last year, it was running 10.10.4 and had no network issues.
Hopefully Apple will come out with a fix soon.I have a Mid 2014 Retina MBP (11,3), given to me by my work. O ther dongles and adapters seem to have similar issues as well which either means the market is flooded with unreliable adapters or there is something unreliable about USB-C in general. And as we can see from the video, these adapters appear to work on other laptops just fine. It's not just this particular dongle that has negative reviews.
#THUNDERBOLT DONGLE SOFTWARE#
Hopefully this is simply a software issue that can be fixed but many fear that this is an issue with USB-C/Thunderbolt in general.
Now the 3rd has stopped working reliably. I've gone through 3 of these already, on the first 2, the charge-thru didn't work, so I couldn't use it with a second peripheral. I have had it for 4 days now and the USB connection to my keyboard and mouse has become intermittent. So I decided to splash the cash and get the Apple one assuming you'll need to pay a premium for this to work. I tried several less expensive adaptors but were all junk and would not properly work via HDMI connection. Unplug from the charger, plug in the adapter and a USB HD, and nothing. If you do decide to call support, expect to be on the phone for an hour only to be told "try plugging it into another port" on your single port usb-c macbook.įor both adapters, frequent restarts are necessary to get a USB peripheral to be recognized. Can crash the laptop when waking from sleep. HDMI connections have bad problems with flickering. If you move the MacBook or the cable my a millimeter the connection fails. This adapter is making the monitor flicker. The only issue it that i use it to connect a wacom tablet to my 12" inch macbook, and there is a lag on the tablet, which wacom support says is because of the adapter. It very well may be the lowest rated product ever made by Apple. After watching this video I assumed that something was wrong with this guys particular laptop or his particular dongle but if you head over to Apple's website you can see the reviews of their dongle.
