I loved it but it was the worst part at the same time. But it’s still entertaining and fast paced.Īnd finally we get to the Hope Arc. On the other hand, Despair is great for plenty of reasons: the whole Nanami-Hajime ship is handled perfectly and her death truly is heart breaking, every Junko scene is just great, the whole class dynamic was fun and entertaining and the Tragedy of Hope’s Peak is gory and punches hard.įuture Arc follows a similar path: the beginning is entertaining but the ultimate resolution feels bland and not satisfying: discovering the mastermind and his plan was definitely a huge let down, the ultimate animator being able to brainwash the entire planet is laughable. Using a “standard” brainwash video on the students was predictable but you’d expect something more elaborate for the Remnants, something that goes beyond showing them a classmate dying. Even worse, the way Junko brainwashed everyone is sad. We don’t see them acting in a particular way, all we have is the first bunch of minutes from Future ep 1. The Despair Arc was great, but the Remnants of Despair were a huge let down since they don’t even seem so “Despairful”, Nagito was still talking about Hope winning always and the others were not different from before at all. Was it good considering that it’s an anime based on a game? It sure was, usually anime based on games aren’t good at all (or anime that are games like Sword Shit Online). It's because the setting they're in is that bad. It's like how even the NCR in Fallout, miles ahead of everyone else in terms of the 'not horrifying cannibal-evil-slaver-mutant-romans' thing, is some bad choices from both collapsing and becoming actively malevolent. It made more sense to me in context why the Future Foundation would be so. So, like, given that, an attitude of purification, of ideological zealotry, of violence, is the absolutely expected result. They don't even have demands, aside from 'fuck you'. Because their ideology is literally, entirely, and purely, 'fuck you'. The anime really doesn't go into it as much as just alluding to it, but like, the Future Foundation is in world war 3 for the fate of the entire human race, and half or more of the entire world is already destroyed.Ĭonditions are hundreds of times more bleak than World War 2, Holocaust and all.Ĭonsider the measures taken in WW2, including the ones that have caused the most historical controversy even to this day, pick some of your favorites, and then consider what the Future Foundation has to go up against, a group somehow more evil than fascists. Just from me being early in (spoiled on all of it, and not particularly sad on that, unlike if it had been one of the games tbh) I can already say that although Munakata is a dumb-dumb, it's in a way that I can totally buy and doesn't feel arbitrary at all. Then I started to actually watch the show when I realized Crunchyroll actually had it, and I was pleasantly surprised to a degree.
I remember watching recaps of the first half or so of the Future Arc, and being very bothered by, uh. Then it did, and it's indicated (to me at least) that Chiaki's death was just the catalyst I assumed Junko went into more depth with them after. That was fine, but still didn't explain much, so I assumed I didn't expect DR3 to give us much there.
They never detailed how it happened DR1, just that it was 'ideological.' That didn't explain much, and then DR2 introduces the Ultimate Despairs idea, and I think everyone just assumed they'd been brainwashed. The brainwashing thing didn't bother me as much as it does others too, because I always kind of took issue with the Tragedy. I loved seeing the DR2 cast in a normal setting in Despair Arc, and seeing Kamukura brought to life was really cool too. The action in Future Arc was great, and seeing Hina, Kyoko, and Makoto again was great. There are some things I really disliked (Future Arc mastermind reveal, all the DR2 characters still being alive in Hope Arc).įor the most part, though, I really liked it. I don't feel as strongly about it as you, but I like it a lot more than a lot of other people around here do.
